En la era de grandes botones de colores vibrantes, interfaces gráficas, logos con reflejos y indicadores 1-2-3 que me dicen cómo hacer las cosas, me he encontrado con goosh.org, una interfaz similar a la de Unix (o para mi, como la del viejo DOS) donde se pueden realizar casi todas las cosas que ofrece Google.

Por ejemplo, escribiendo “places barcelona spain”, me muestra instantáneamente el mapa de Google con Barcelona en el medio.

Es por esto que aprecio aún más el fantástico trabajo que ha realizado Luke Wroblewski en su libro “Web Form Design: Filling in the Blanks“.

Como ocurre con cualquier libro “generalista” – aunque sea dentro de un tópico muy concreto- está más inclinado a los principiantes. Me hubiese gustado ver un proceso entero ilustrado para el diseño de formularios realmente complejos, pero los casos que ilustra y comenta ayudan a “unir los puntos” y formarse una buena idea de los puntos realmente importantes a tener en cuenta.

Podría tratarse hasta cierto punto de un libro de “patterns”, pero para ello también le haría falta más ejemplos de cada caso o punto.

Habiendo dicho esto (es que siempre se puede pedir más! ), es un libro que sin duda tendrá un lugar destacado en mi librería de referencia. Todos los años de experiencia no ayudan a que con las prisas o, justamente por demasiada confianza, a veces se dejen puntos vitales de lado.

El libro se adquiere directamente de la tienda de Rosenfeld Media (aún cuando comprando a través de Amazon), y ofrecen también la descarga digital gratis al comprar el libro. La entrega fue un placer – 2 días laborables desde momento de la compra online hasta la entrega en Barcelona (están basados en Nueva York)

Acrobat.com ofrece colaboración online, habilidad para cargar y compartir documentos, un generador de PDFs y un procesador de texto, todo con una interfaz Flash similar a la de Photoshop Express.

Como usuaria y consumidora habitual de gadgets que mejoren mi productividad (así tengo más tiempo libre para buscar más gadgets), me entusiasma porque tiene una experiencia de uso agradable, elegante pero divertida (aunque por momentos me recuerda a otros programas, entre ellos iPhoto

La he probado para crear documentos (que puedo guardar como PDF nativo y editable, .doc o .docx, entre otros), subir y compartir documentos (muy rápido y sencillo), para crear un PDF (aunque sólo admite unos pocos formatos habituales – mis Visio quedan fuera).

En cuanto a la herramienta de colaboración virtual, he hecho un petit test entre mi portatil Dell y mi iMac y estoy francamente impresionada. Ofrece videoconferencia, notas compartidas y chat (mensajes privados una opción). Hay que decir que pesa, y hay cierta demora que varía según la conexión. Pero vale, funciona, y tiene una experiencia de uso muy superior a la de Zoho.

Si bien queda mucho por jugar testear, es una opción válida que le planta firme cara a Google Docs (que uso porque es estable, tiene una buena experiencia de uso) y a Zoho (que me gusta por la variedad de aplicaciones que ofrece – incluyendo todo lo que ofrece Acrobat.com sans PDF, pero cuya interfaz me gusta bien poco),

Echo a faltar en acrobat.com la posibilidad de crear presentaciones o hojas de cálculo (para lo cual uso Google Docs, mientras la interfaz de Zoho sea como es), pero agradezco la conversión a PDF (aunque se ve que power-users terminan pagando por ciertas funcionalidades)

Queda por ver si Google tiene pensado extenderse en el area de colaboración audiovisual / compartir escritorios o si Adobe tiene pensado incluir presentaciones u hojas de cálculo.

Google Docs sigue siendo el ganador para creación y edición de documentos, y lo seguiré usando, pero Adobe con Acrobat.com acaba de poner en la mesa virtual un producto muy válido que me ha impresionado y convencido lo suficiente para incorporarlo en mi caja de herramientas y será mi próxima elección de colaboración virtual en tiempo real.

La pregunta es ¿a quién beneficia esto? ¿A los candidatos, o a Google (y la cantidad de influencia política que ganan con la información amasada y que no comparten con los candidatos)

And yet, after years of being a cliente, I am pissed. Whenever I got to www.amazon.com, I know that they know it’s me. They tell me so right away- but they ignore it.

I go to www.amazon.com because it’s a store that has almost everything book there is, a store that knows what I bought from them, what I saw, what I chose in my Wish List, things I owned but not bought from them because I commented on them.

And yet, I get there and see nothing of that. In fact, they have the misfortune of offering me stuff like jewelry, more jewelry, clothes (for women, so at least they know I am one), etc which I would never buy online (of offline, in the case of jewelry). “Stuff for women”, I guess. Ahem. Pitty I am not you “average woman” (if such thing exists). (see image on the left, click to make bigger)

Anyway. The only personal thing in the home page is the “Hello, Gaby Prado”. It seems to be there so I don’t forget they know who I am. (and that they are ignoring me).

So I’m in the home page, not looking for anything specific, but rather wanting to exploit their recommendation engine and see what new stuff they’ve got that might interest me. Here the trouble begins. I know it’s there but have to carefully read the whole page until I found a small (tiny) text right there on top, next to the logo, that says “Gaby’s Amazon.com”. It’s not underlined (unlike other links on the page), but it’s blue. So I go for it, hoping.

Bingo. There’s my recommendations, and all other stuff they offer. (see image on the left, click to make bigger)

Can you spot the difference? Right. No jewelry. No clothes. No-nothing to do my grocery shopping. Only books – and from pretty specific categories.

It wouldn’t be so bad if I they weren’t so huge on “intelligent recommendation”, on crossing and keep interliking stuff until you buy at least one of the items you saw.

I understand that it is not easy, but hey, if detecting who I am with a couple cookies is not enough to serve me a personalised page (that is, take me directly to the “My Amazon” page), at least let me choose what I want to see (like we do in Netvibes, Google, Yahoo, etc). I don’t expect Asgard technology, just a few widely-used tools and a little power over what I see.

Most importantly, I would welcome some good cross-selling. If I buy a science fiction book, it would be great to see what offers they have on the latest DVD release of sci-fi series. If I’m shopping for books on graphic design, it wouldn’t be so creazy to see Apple hardware or even video-editing software (hanging from a limb here)

But no. I get jewelry, dresses and the teen Seventeen magazine. Or nothing, once I ignore the front page and get to “My Amazon” where I only get to see more books – and unfortunately, I’m often offered books I have already bought from… Amazon.

Once I’m in, persuability kicks in, and I’ll make a purchase, or at least, save it to my Wish List. And if I buy, I’ll be so happy with the service that I’ll come back. And I do – although I get annoyed enough the welcome to rant about it here – breaking a few months dry-spell in blog writing.

The first impression is frankly far from pleasant. And if I want cross-selling (cross-media, that is), I have to go browse the entire monster-store. Not good.

I wonder how much stuff I bought online elsewhere I could have bought from Amazon… Must confess though, I’m an “old-timer” who witnessed Amazon’s birth and got to know it as The Book Store, and have it difficult to think of it as another Target, so I go elsewhere for my electronics, for instance.

Still, I don’t stop learning from Amazon. Mostly from their hits, but in this case, from this MISS.
